January Update

Five new chips added to the collection thanks to a trip to the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. They are -

1. O'Shea's - new house chip. O'Shea's really went all out with their new chip... it is exactly the same as their previous chip only they added a tiny top hat logo above the name of the casino. Scintillating. From the looks of it, they haven't changed anything else about the actual casino, so they have that going for them.

2. Monte Carlo - Jabbawockeez. Again - a really bold move by a casino here as it's the same as the other Jabba chip, only instead of having a black insert, this one is white. The group's motto is apparently "Laugh Cheer Move." I bet when the Monte Carlo caught on fire a few years back everyone skipped the laugh and cheer part. Which reminds me of something I commented on on twitter (@jonross22)... The Carlo has a casino bar named "Ignite." How quickly we forget the 2008 fire. Unless they were going for irony. Which, if that was the case, why not just name the bar "Smoke Inhalation?"

3. Flamingo - Margaritaville Casino. This is a section of the Flamingo dubbed "Margaritaville." It appears to be as dumb as it sounds. I didn't even stroll through it to double-check.

4. Flamingo - new house chip. As opposed to the Margaritaville chip, I actually like the new Flamingo chip. It has a little flamingo bird above the script "Flamingo." Looks nice and isn't super busy. I bet they have a separate marketing department than the Margaritaville folks.

5. New York, New York - new house chip. Gone is the Statue of Liberty, replaced by just a red insert with a printed "New York New York." Not nearly as good as the old one. I still can't walk into this place without immediately thinking of two stories; the fight, and the ecstasy.

That's it for now - I'm off to read about a proposed casino Lansing hopes to open in 23-24 years. Hopefully that will be chip #1200 or something for me.

Mid-January Update

One new chip added to the collection, courtesy of Michelle Lange (@LangeM77). She spent two weeks in Australia and visited one of the countries 17 casinos. This one is from the casino in Cairns, called The Reef. It's on the northeast side of the country.

Their website is pretty slick (http://www.reefcasino.com.au/), when it initially loads up, it actually has an image of a rotating casino chip. The casino has a dress code, requiring "smart, clean clothing and suitable footwear." I'm not sure I want to know the story behind the "suitable footwear" clause. Wait, since Lange was there, I think I know the story.

This is my first chip from the Eastern and Southern hemispheres. I need to get cracking on some Euro chips.

Overall, this is a pretty nice looking chip - complete with a mini-seahorse type creature design on it. And, bonus!, the $5 Australian chip is actually worth around $5.16 US. Which makes it about 3% more valuable than my other chips! Thanks again Michelle!

December Update

Two new chips added in December, I got both of them for Christmas. They are:

1. M Resort - 2nd Anniversary 2011. Congrats to the M for making it to year two! I still have not seen this place, as it's a good 10 miles south of McCarran.

2. Monte Carlo - Grand Opening 1996. June 21 to be exact. I've probably gambled at the Carlo more than any other casino on the strip. Actually, there's no probably about it. I've definitely gambled here more than any other strip casino. Still haven't stayed here though. Maybe next time. Which is in ten short days... hopefully I'll be able to pick up a few of the new house chips.

October Update

Two new chips added during the month of October.

1. Las Vegas Hilton - older house chip.
2. Las Vegas Hilton - Spacequest Casino.

The LV Hilton will most likely be changing names sometime soon, as they are losing their affiliation with the Hilton brand. So, I'm trying to collect as many of the Hilton chips as I can while they are still floating around.

The Spacequest Casino chip has a hologram in the middle and I guess it sort of fits in with their Star Trek theme. Sounds like a place the Klingons would gamble.

1. Grand Casino - Hinckley, MN
My aunt and uncle picked this one up for me while they were (hopefully) traveling through Hinckley. I hope they didn't purposely go there... no offense to all my blog readers from Hinckley.

2. North Star Resort and Casino - Bowler, WI
My parents picked this one up on a trip designed to go to Bowler. I don't know either.

3. Menominee Casino Bingo Hall - Keshena, WI
Same trip for mom and dad. Beats me.

What do all three of these chips have in common? I couldn't find any of the cities they are located in on a map. In fact, I had never even heard of these places until I read their names on the chips.

August 2011 Update

Three new chips have been added -

1. Barbary Coast 2000 "The Millennium."
Nothing special about this chip, but I think it gives me every $5 chip the BC pumped out before its' untimely closing. The Leprechaun on one side is a nice touch.

2. Oneida Casino - Green Bay, WI
One of my aunts brought this back for me. One of the few non-red $5 chips I have seen. Maybe the guy who runs the Oneida is color-blind?

3. Gun Lake Casino - Wayland, MI
Situated between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, this is Michigan's newest casino. A buddy picked it up for me while he was there for a bachelor party. This one is red, so at least they got that going for them.

Hard Rock - Tampa, FL

This will be the first chip for frame #5. Yes, the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa is my 253rd five dollar chip. It's also where Anna Nicole Smith died. I didn't know that when we were there. We stopped in one night after a spring training game and it was odd. No roulette or craps. Blackjack minimums were $50! And the tables were full. There was also some type of dance contest going on in front of one of their bar/restaurants. It was crazy. Mostly because I didn't win, but also just because it was going on. I'm not sure if it was a sponsored thing or an impromptu breakdown or what. So, we packed up quickly and hit Thee Doll House. Should have stayed at the casino, as bad as it was. But that's a story for a different blog.

Tropicana

The Tropicana. It smells like old people. Always has, probably always will. I don't like seeing the older "famous" casinos close down, but I'd make an exception for this place. Plus, that corner lot is dying for a new casino to tie in with MGM, NYNY and Excalibur.

Sahara

The Sahara. Sadly, the Sahara is closing May 2011. I've played thousands of dollar blackjack hands at the place. Never once rode the roller coaster or went down the water slide in front of it though. The Sahara had one of the strangest side bets I've ever seen at a casino. I think it's evolved over the years because there are a few different versions, but it either involved getting a blackjack or a pair of the same card (including suit) and if you made an extra $1 bet - you would either spin a wheel to win a prize or there was a pre-determined dollar amount you won. Either way, it was dumb. But most of the people playing there were dumb, so I guess it evens out. One of our first trips (Vegas '98) we ate the buffet for some strange reason. The was the year we willfully stayed at the Stardust, so we were obviously a group that wasn't strong with decision-making. But - despite all that, I'll miss the Sahara. The north end of the strip gets a little more lonely come May.

Caesars Palace

This logo looks like it would work better for Little Caesars Pizza not Caesars Palace. But Caesar didn't actually live there and the casino isn't beeper friendly (a bank of pay phones doesn't count) so who cares?

Del Webb's The Mint

The Mint. Opened in 1957 and later became part of Binion's Horseshoe. Hunter S. Thompson stayed there during his Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas book. Also, I believe James McManus stayed there (after it sold to Binion's) and wrote about it in Positively Fifth Street. The have (or had) a rooftop pool - which would be cool to swim in if it wasn't 250 feet closer to the sun. I like to get sun burnt but come on people! You might as well sit inside a microwave!

Jockey Club

The Jockey Club isn't a casino and never has been. It was supposed to be, hence they made chips. But it wasn't to be. Now, the Jockey Club is just a timeshare on the strip. I'm not even sure if the rooms are available like a hotel - or if it is strictly condo type arrangements. It's had a pretty prominent spot on the strip for years though, so even though the casino never made it, the chip is kind of cool.

Gold Spike

The Gold Spike casino opened in 1976, closed shortly thereafter and then reopened in 1983. It's apparently been totally redone on the inside and is quite nice for a downtown joint. It's been years since I've been downtown, so I'll have to take the interwebs word for it. I just like the logo on the chip.

MGM Grand Boxing

Three new chips from the MGM Grand Las Vegas for the collection.

1. New house chip. Nothing fancy. In fact, it's pretty tough to notice the difference. I thought I had the same chip for a second. But upon closer inspection there are two noticeable differences. The first is a small top hat/cane icon just above the "Las" in Las Vegas. The second is a thicker red circle around the white inlay. Way to change things up MGM.

2. DelaHoya-Hopkins. Quest for History - 9/18/04. The infamous "body shot" fight. Hopkins KO'ed The Golden Boy in the 9th round and did it very impressively. Oscar would fight just 4 times after this one, going 2-2 with losses to Mayweather and Pacquiao. Hopkins meanwhile has gone 6-3-1 since this fight, losing twice to Jermain Taylor (I attended the second one) and beating Winky Wright, Antonio Tarver, Kelly Pavlik and Roy Jones Jr. Of course, that Jones victory would have been more impressive 15 years ago. Back to the DelaHoya/Hopkins fight - it was in the 9th round that you could hear Hopkins' corner calling for a body shot. Seconds later, B-Hop crushed Oscar with a vicious left hook to the body, that dropped the former champ for good.

3. Mayweather-Mosley. Who R U Picking? - 5/1/10. Derby Day 2010. While we sat in the rain and cheered on Super Saver, Floyd beat the ever-living crap out of Shane Mosley. 119 on two cards and 118 on the third for Pretty Boy. Mosley did rock him once in the second, but Mayweather never went down, regained his composure and put on a clinic. Unfortunately, that's the last time we've seen Floyd in the ring, although he had reportedly been out hitting people in the Las Vegas area. Meanwhile, fresh off a draw against Sergio Mora, Mosley gets the guy everyone wants Mayweather to fight - Manny Pacquiao. Awesome.

Four new chips

Four new chips for the collection... all of them splendid.

1. New house chip for the Silver Nugget in North Las Vegas. Kind of a cool chip, the reverse has a white inlay. I don't believe I'm been to the Silver Nugget (it's no Golden Nugget), but if I'm in North LV, I might stop in. The chip inspires me.

2. New house chip for the Tropicana. You can dress up the Trop all you want, but that place will always smell like old people to me. Always.

3. Monte Carlo Jabbawockeez. Being my favorite casino, I get any chip the Carlo pumps up... but I did have to think about this one for a second. Some dance group or something? Just doesn't seem like they should have their own chip. But if the Carlo deems them worthy, I guess I can too. I just hope they don't burn the place down.

4. New house chip for Fitzgerald's in downtown. I have been to Fitzgerald's, probably a handful of times. And I can't remember a damn thing about the place. Fitzgerald's - at least I didn't get knifed there, I don't think.

Cosmopolitan

Got the new house and Grand Opening chips for the Cosmopolitan. Opened on December 15 of 2010. It sits between the Bellagio and the City Center. I expect it to suffer financial trouble very soon.

Jumer's and Four Winds

Work trips to Iowa are proving to be profitable for the chip collecting business. The first trip netted the Riverside Casino chip and the second nets Jumer's and Four Winds.

Jumer's is located in Rock Island, Illinois practically on the Illinois/Iowa border. It opened just about 18 months ago, so it's still brand spankin' new. In true Steve Wynn fashion, the casino is named after the owner. Well, I guess in near-Steve Wynn fashion. It's not called Wynn's. Other than that, it's a pretty standard casino. Sort of laid out like the Hard Casino in Vegas in that the floor is a big circle with all the gambling done in the middle and all the restaurants, cage and shops on the outside. No gambling, just made a quick pit stop to grab a chip.

The Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, MI (not to be confused with Old Buffalo) was a little tougher to get to. While Jumer's was located right off I-80 and can be seen from the highway, Four Winds requires a lengthy drive on what has to be the state's windingest driveway. It too is fairly new and is kind of a cross between Soaring Eagle and Firekeepers. Not as big as the Eagle and not as bright and flashy as Firekeeper's. And definitely not more convenient for me, unless I'm on my way to Iowa.

Riverside Casino and Golf Resort

A recent work trip brought me to the relatively new Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. It opened about 5 years ago and still looks brand new. The golf course looks very, very nice. I might have to bring my clubs with me next time.

I played $5 blackjack both nights I stayed there. The first went fine. I sat at first base with 5 kids from the University of Iowa. A couple of them knew how to play so they were keeping the other kids in line. Which was nice. No table shenanigans and I won a couple of hands. All is good.

The next night, I sat at first base with some older people. They sucked. I wish I had my notebook with me so I could write down all the horrible plays. One lady, playing in the middle, had unique "strategy." She based what she though the dealer's down card was based on the second card dealt to third base. If third base got a low card second, the dealer's down card was a 10. And vice-versa. I'm not shitting you. So, it didn't matter what she had, she hit/stayed based on what she thought the dealer had. And of course, it "worked" 1 out of 5 times. And the one time it worked, she made a big deal about her strategy "always" working. Idiot. The guy sitting to her left was also a dope. He had a weird mustache and had a confused look on his face... like he was counting cards, but they were going by too fast. Or he couldn't remember if an 8 counted as a zero or not. At least, I hope he was a failing card counter. No person should be staying on 14s and 16s against 8s and 9s. Yes, he did this. Multiple times.

Very rarely have I seen table play so bad and having such a negative effect on everyone's hands that I jump up and run like the building is on fire... but this was one of those nights. In 20-25 minutes, I saw so many bad plays, I snapped. I scooped up my chips, stood up and beat feet. I didn't even answer when the dealer asked if she could 'color me up.' I was not going to spend another second at that table, no matter what. That place must rake in the dough if that's their normal clientele.

MGM Grand - Detroit

Opening Day in Detroit was this past Friday. You might remember previous adventures of mine. This year was just as fun, although I'm still a little hazy on all of the details. Needless to say, the Tigers won, many beers were consumed, there were a handful of "whoops" and it was worth a million. Also, I got this chip from the MGM Grand Detroit. The casino was pretty full after the game and I thought I was pretty lucky to score a seat at a $15 table. Because I was operating with 20-25% alcohol in my bloodstream, I neglected to see the actual name of the game - "Double Exposure Blackjack." Oh boy. So, the dealer deals both of her cards face up. Cool, huh? You lose pushes. Not so cool. Three hands in, I get 21, the dealer gets 21 and she scoops my bet. I stand-up and yell something about stealing my money, before the pit boss comes over and tells me to learn the rules. Or something. Grrr. Not fun. I got wiped out in seconds. It was ugly. But I did get this new chip.
Now, I know what you are saying. You're saying "Hey, that looks just like the other house chip you have. Are you sure you didn't get a duplicate chip?" No, idiot. I didn't. Who do you think I am? Do you think I run a highly successful blog and can't even tell the difference between two chips? Of course not. Here they are side by side.

As you can see, the differences are very distinguishable. One has a second line under the MGM Grand in the middle. One's lion is a little bigger. The outer markings are different. Clearly two different chips. How did I know this whilst drunk enough to not even now what game I was playing? Ummm... lucky?

Maxim

Way before their was a Maxim Magazine, there was a Maxim Casino, just off the strip. I can't even remember if the old building is still standing, but I think it was sort of behind the Flamingo/IP. It stood decaying (or still stands decaying) for a long, long time. But I'm pretty sure it closed long before I could have gone there. And I'm too lazy to look up any facts.

Which I have been to and have their house chip. It's kind of across from Bally's. Well, across from the Bally's Employment Center which is behind Bally's.

Here's what I know about Casino Monte Lago. It celebrated its' first anniversary in May 2004. It's located in Henderson. It's no longer open. The first two facts I gleaned from the chips themselves. The last from Casino Death Watch. Because I like buying up chips from casinos that are no longer open, buying these two was a no-brainer.

Aruba, again

Because I had collected 14 chips while I was actually in Aruba and because my chip frames hold chips in rows of 9, I thought it was a good idea to procure 4 more Aruban chips from eBay, in order to give me 2 complete rows of Aruba chips. Mission Accomplished. But not in the George W. Bush way, I actually accomplished the mission. They are; the Seaport Casino, The Palm Casino, the Aruba Palm Beach Casino, and the Aruba Caribbean Casino. None were still open when I was there. In fact, I didn't even see old, bombed-out closed buildings that could have been them. But here they are anyway.

Aruba, Part 7

My final Aruba update... the last night we were there we stopped at the Alhambra Casino which was just a short walk from the resort. They offered $3 blackjack from 6pm to 7pm, although that went to almost 8. The $3 tables in Aruba attract some unconventional players, to say the least. To start, there were two kids in the middle of the table who did such things as;

-stay on 12 against a 20
-not hit an 8
-try to double a 13 against a 19

All in all, they were definitely not a fan of basic strategy. Later, some drunk dude with a beard sat in the middle. He proceeded to not hit a 14 against a 20. Two hands later, I had an 11 against the dealer's ace and took a hit. He told me I should have doubled. I wanted to pull out a gun and shoot him in the mouth for even attempting to tell another player how to play... especially after not hitting a 14. But such is life. I didn't take any chips from the table because earlier in the stay I got them from the cage. Since they don't offer blackjack until 6pm and I walked in at 11am to collect them, this was a slight problem. I had to tell the cashier I was leaving that day, and before 6pm, so she could call a supervisor over to unlock the super secret chip room. She did hip me to not just the house chip, but also a 25th anniversary chip that features Rerun on it. If anyone knows the true identity of who this is... let me know. I'm dying to find out. And if it is Rerun... I'd kill for a Jimmy Walker chip.

Aruba, Part 6

The very first night in Aruba, I got the house chip to the Crystal Casino at the Renaissance Resort downtown. This resort has a mall attached, too... and they actually boat people from the inside of the mall to a private beach. Pretty cool. The second-to-last day in Aruba, we played there and I actually found they had two older chips in play, so I was able to collect those... and experience my most profitable table stay. So I kind of like the place.

Next I played at the Riu Palace. This was easily the nicest, fanciest, newest resort on the island. And what did they name their casino? Cool Casino. Seriously. It was pretty fricking cool though. Nice plasma TVs all over the pits (tuned to soccer of course). Didn't have much luck at blackjack here, but at least I didn't spill any beer.

Aruba, Part 3

On to the places I actually sat at a table and played some cards. First up, the Casablanca Casino at the Hyatt.
This chip was in the early running for nicest looking, but I must have collected the ugly ones first. Very Vegas-y look to it. Table was okay, but the beer service was pretty good. They even brought me a Balashi after I cashed out and was sitting at a slot machine.
But seriously, try the Balashi. It's muy bueno.

Aruba, Part 2

More from Aruba and the places I did not play at. First, The Occidental Grand. Conveniently located across the street from Tomato Charlie's Pizza. Which, has extremely slow service.
Then there's Excelsior, which was at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort. A good place to find tips on art galleries, but not to play blackjack apparently.
And finally, The Casino at the Radisson. Not exactly the most creative name. Not the best looking chip either.

Aruba, Part 1

Fourteen new chips collected while on vacation in Aruba. I visited all 9 of the current casinos. Two have recently closed so I'll have to scour eBay to find those chips and complete the island set. First, the Stellaris. Located at the Marriott, it was roughly 29 miles away from our condo. Which is impressive on an island 18 miles in length. It took us a long time to walk out there and find it, but once we did I found two chips. One house and one... I'm not sure. One with monkeys, but I'm not sure why. Didn't play at all at this place, way too tired from walking.

The Eagle

This Soaring Eagle chip with the "Swan Creek Black River Saginaw" stamp on the back was picked up in December when I saw Jim Gaffigan perform. It's dated 2004, and I have no idea why I hadn't seen one before. It's in pretty rough shape and I have no idea the significance of the stamp on the back, but here it is. (Picture coming).

Excalibur

Been a while since I've updated but that doesn't mean I haven't collected any chips. It just means I've been to lazy to lug the scanner home. I had my brother's friend pick me up these (pictures coming) special edition chips from the Excalibur. When I was there in September I saw a big banner hanging over the cage promoting the new chips. So, I went up to the cashier and asked for them only to be told they wouldn't be out for another month. Which is why i had to "order" them. Still not sure that the Excalibur is the casino that should be marketing the "party pit" but what do I know? So, thanks to Murray for picking these up and getting them to me.

Updated Photos

This past week I've taken the time to re-do the photos of my 200 chips. Instead of taking a picture of each one, or a set and photo-shopping each one out, I used a scanner to scan each chip. I think the difference is amazingly noticeable. No more washed-out chips from the flash, or chips that get super blurry when you enlarge them. Much better. So, I've started the process of swapping out the old pictures for the new ones. Got 62.5% of the blog posts fixed. Eventually, they will all be done. Compare the difference... the new ones have a light-color background, the old ones have a black background. w00t! Scanner! Not since the days of visiting the old slot house has this piece of technology proved to be so handy.

Vegas '09

Added two new chips on my most recent trip to Vegas. Was supposed to be three, but I somehow lost one. Someone on the monorail ended their day with 5 more dollars than they thought. Anyhoos. Got a new Casino Royale house chip and a Tropicana chip commemorating the 11th annual Preserving Gaming History Annual International Convention. Did you even know they have that? Well, they do. Or did. This is from 2003. So, they'd be up to 17th annual if they are still having them. Eventhough it was organized in 1988. My math is bad, or annual doesn't mean every year anymore.

Firekeepers

A hearty blog welcome to Michigan's newest casino, Firekeepers in Battle Creek. It opened in the summer and is actually pretty nice. Bunch of restaurants, a sports bar, plenty of tables and slots. I was impressed. Lost a little bit at their tables, but not as much as I would have had we went the night before following a raucous game of Death Card.

What's the name of the game? Death Card. Why do we play? To get fucked up.

Circus Circus

Added this spiffy new Circus Circus house chip over the summer. My parents brought it back for me. They were in Vegas to help my brother move. Lucky them. Or him, I guess, if you think poorly of Saginaw. Haven't been in the ol' CC in quite a while and this will save me the trouble of getting down there on my next trip(s). Also, the front of the new chip looks just like the old one, but the back is different. Probably should have taken a picture of that instead. Oh well.

Greektown Christmas 2004

Opening Day 2009... known more for the Tigers 15-2 win over Texas, but also as the day I collected this Greektown Christmas 2004 chip. After Rob, Eric, Kapp and I went to the game, the DBC and a few other bars, three of us went to the casino. Kapp went to another bar (surprise!). Rob did fairly well, as I watched him play and Eric played in another portion of the casino. Then we met Kapp at the bar and for dinner (Right off the street!). To escape further shenanigans, the three of us once again went to the casino whilst Kapp once again went to the bar. In fact, Kapp was in pursuit of more shenanigans. After watching Rob and Eric do well, I finally sat down in third base and the three of us played in a row at the same table. Normally I don't play continuous shuffle machines, especially for $25 a hand, but I was drunk. 45 minutes later, I was up about $150 and the guys were ready to go, so I cashed in and in the process picked up this sweet reminder of what Christmas in a casino, in Detroit, 5 years ago, must have been like.

Earlier in the day, in an episode totally unrelated to the casino, I had to worst $5 cab ride of all time. Kapp and I got a cab at the Ren Cen and were hoping to get to Centar via some back roads, due to the gameday/Good Friday traffic. We get in the cab and in the course of two blocks, this was what was said:

Me: Can you take us to the Centar? It's at Montcalm and Park.
Cabbie: Montcalm and Park.
Me: It's really busy around the stadium, so if you know any back roads... that'd be awesome.
Cabbie: Centar.
Me: Yep.
Cabbie: Going to baseball game?
Me: Well, yes... in 3 hours... it's only 10am. Let's just get to the bar.
Cabbie: Where it is?
Me: What?
Cabbie: I take you to game?
Me: No. The Centar.
Cabbie: I'm new here, I don't know that.
Me: Montcalm and Park.
Cabbie: No.
Me: It's across from the Town Pump. Hockeytown. It's got a giant freaking puck rotating 50 feet in the sky. You don't know where that is?
Cabbie: I take you to Greektown?
Me: That's awesome... we're in Greektown. We want Hockeytown.
Cabbie: Baseball game.
Me: Fine. Take us to Comerica, that's close enough.
Cabbie: I know Ford Field. Go there?
Me: What? Comerica is across the goddamn street. How can you not know where Comerica is?
Cabbie: I'm new.
Me: Just stop, we'll get out and walk from here. Fuck me.

Another New Chip

The newest chip to join my collection is the $5 house chip from the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, MO (near St. Louis). The casino is a "riverboat" situated on the mighty Missouri River. The riverboat doesn't even pretend to act as a boat, the casino is attached to the parking garage/hotel on land. Inside, it's bright and shiny and new looking (being 5 or so years old will do that), but it's nothing special. There is a metric ton of penny slots on both levels. Yes, penny slots. I witnessed a guy hit a 'jackpot' on one of them. Whilst wandering around, I noticed a group of people standing behind a guy, as his slot machine was running through a pay-out. Everyone was amazed at his massive winnings, a solid 10,000 units. Until you realized that on a penny machine, that's $100. Woo-hoo. I wonder if that old guy will get to retire now? Which reminds me, the casino itself was pretty empty. Sure it was a Monday night (President's Day to be exact), but it was empty. Pretty standard collection of old people, oxygen tanks and old people with oxygen tanks. Only a handful of blackjack tables ($15 min.) and other assorted table games. Not the worst I've ever seen, but I would definitely check out the other 3 St. Louis-area casinos before going back to the Ameristar. Which, by the way, wins the award for lamest casino name ever. So they at least have that going for them.

New Chip

Still no new camera, so no picture right now of my newest addition - the $5 house chip from the Odawa Casino Resort in Petoskey, MI. Opened in 2007, it was a really nice place. Pretty clean, and not beaten down by years of chain-smoking. Yet. They had a decent amount of blackjack tables, and they've yet fallen victim to the devious automated shuffle machines, so they've got that going for them. I think I won $20 playing for about 15 minutes. We were eager to leave and get to the bar after Monika won $1500 on the Wheel of Fortune progressive machines.

The Odawa did have a "dance club" located inside, called the 'O-Zone.' I was fairly certain we'd spend some time there and it would provide us with a lot of unintentional humor, but once Monika won her big prize, I kind of forgot about suggesting we go there. Next time, I will definitely have a report on the 'O-Zone.' And hopefully a new camera by then.

New Chips

You'll have to wait a while to see pictures of the 4 new chips I got. I have not yet replaced my camera that was stolen about 6 weeks ago. But these four chips are all from my most recent trip to Vegas, December 9-11.

1. Green Valley Ranch house chip. Some of you may remember Green Valley Ranch from the hit Discovery Channel show American Casino. No? Well, read all about it here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414718/fullcredits#cast. Too bad they didn't have Tata or Nina chips. Those would have been fun to collect. The casino itself was fairly nice. Out in Henderson, which was about a 15 minute ride from the Strip on the highway. Had lunch there, the prime rib sandwich.

2. Monte Carlo "Brand" chip. Brand is the new steakhouse at the Carlo and to commemorate, they put 5,000 chips into circulation. The steakhouse is right behind the blackjack pit, opposite of the cage. It actually looks fairly nice. Not sure if Lance Burton eats there or anything, but I would definitely give it a go at some point. And for the life of me, I can't remember what used to be in that space. Which is odd, because I'm usually so sober, coherent and cognizant whilst playing blackjack at the Carlo. I just hope Brand is open for a long, long time and that it doesn't accidentally start fire to the Carlo. Again.

3. Palazzo "Jersey Boys" chip. Jersey Boys is a show about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I can not imagine a circumstance under which I would go see this show. Maybe if they were handing out $1,000 bills at the door. Maybe. The only reason I saved this chip was because I was playing blackjack at the Venetian, waiting for the Davidson-West Virginia game to start, and got this one and the next chip whilst playing. As for the game, I won. The next night, I lost both games. Including Butler, who was a "lock." I even watched the game with a couple of Las Vegas sharps, and they thought the same thing. So, I guess I'm as dumb as a sharp.

4. The Venetian "Wayne Brady" chip. Yes! Finally. A Wayne Brady chip. He'll look nice in a frame with the Lance Burton's, Dennis Miller's, Seigfried and Roy's and Jerry Tarkanian's of the chip world. Is Wayne Brady going to have to choke a bitch? I have no idea. But now his smiling face will be present in my bedroom 24/7. The name of his show is apparently "Making %@it Up." That's exactly how it's spelled. Wayne Brady... so edgy.

So, those are the newest four. Look for pictures to be up sometime after the new year when I finally get a new camera. I might even have some more chips by then. I think I'm about 11 away from my third full frame.

Added nine new chips to my collection this past week, thanks to my brother. He was able to scour the streets of Las Vegas to get me; the new Bellagio house chip, the new California house chip, the Riviera Crazy Girls chip, the Riviera 1955 chip, the Gold Coast house chip, the new Las Vegas Club house chip, one of the Rio's Penn & Teller chips, the Four Queens' 5 year anniversary chip and the Four Queens' 8-8-08 chip.

Nothing exciting about the collection of these chips, but on the drive home from the UP my brother was driving his rental car. Just north of Gaylord, we hit something in the road and blew two tires and damamged the rims. After getting towed to a car dealership in Gaylord, the service guy told us he couldn't find any tires to put on, or a second spare to put on and we would have to spend the night in Gaylord and deal with it in the morning. Awesome. He wanted my brother to drop almost 2 grand on a rental car, instead of just putting two spares on it and sending us on our way. In the morning, after some convincing, he finally relented and put two spares on it and we were off. I made it to Mt. Pleasant to get my car and my brother made it to Detroit in time to make his flight home to Vegas. I don't know why the dealership couldn't have put the two spares on the night before, saving us the trouble of staying in Gaylord... but if you are in northern lower Michigan and looking to buy a car, I'd stay away from the GM dealership in Gaylord. Not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

I purchased this chip online after I went to the Kentucky Derby in May of 2005. It was my first time to Derby and I haven't missed one since. Giacomo was the big winner that day, followed by Barbaro, Street Sense and Big Brown. I won big on Barbaro in '06. But more important than the winners (and the horses who get put down on the track) are the wild, drunken shenanigans that happen at Derby. From our traditional Friday meal at Hooters (complete with pregnant waitresses!), to Fourth Street Live (complete with pregnant waitresses!), to the Church, Derby, KFC afterwards and the longest drive home on Sunday... there's never a dull moment. And without this yearly trip to Loo-ville, we'd have never met the Joint Commander. Or Darla, the incarcerated flasher. Or sung "Fraggle Rock" so many times. Or gambled on Sirius Radio. Or hit on Janet from 90210. Or been called 'loose dicks.' Or met the President (of what?). Good times. I could go on and on. But after returning home, sunburned, in 2005, I immediately purchased this chip. Derby... almost as fun as Vegas.

Shark Reef

UPDATE: I think I combined two different trips to make this story. The animal chips/shots at the table/Rahman-Lewis trip was from a trip in early 2002. The Hopkins/Taylor fight trip was in 2005.

In 2005, Hop and I were in Las Vegas for the second Bernard Hopkins-Jermaine Taylor fight. A spectacularly crappy fight that was notable for 3 reasons:

1. An extreme level of drunkenness (more on this later)
2. Both of us losing big bets on B-Hop
3. Before the main event, they filmed some scenes for Rocky VI. We got to see both Stallone's and Tarver's entrances and their intro's. Plus it gave me a good opportunity to ask Hop how old he thought Stallone was. Good stuff.

Back to the drunkenness and the original point of this post, getting the Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef chip. Throughout this trip, we played a handful of sessions of blackjack at the Mandalay. And we repeatedly did shots at the table... and tried to get others at the table to do them with us. Most declined. Probably because it was always ridiculously early in the afternoon... and they probably didn't want to wind up "the drunk asshats," like we were. Well, the Mandalay has a handful of animal-themed chips. The Shark Reef being one of them. They also have a bunch of "Year of the ____" chips. Goat, Monkey, Snake and Dragon that I can remember. There might be more. Through the course of play, we'd both accumulate a few of these animal chips, and whenever we'd lose a couple hands, we'd make it a point to bet with an animal chip and say something like, "I better set the dragon lose here, I need a win." Got to be a pretty fun endeavor that I think a few people at the table did start to follow. I think Hop even collected a $25 Rahman/Lewis chip that he kept. Don't ask me why. I didn't want the "Year of" chips, but I did keep one of the Shark Reef chips. I'm sure sending a Shark out to get a blackjack win was always a profitable endeavor.

The Flamingo

LV '01 will forever be remembered for the great Freak-Out. We were staying at the Flamingo... me, my brother, Hop and Joel. The four of us took turns getting killed at the tables. One night, my brother and I fared poorly. The next, it was Hop and Joel. Then, me and Hop. Which led to a lot of instances where two people would go do something, while the two who had just gotten raped, would get cheap food and try to kill some time before giving the tables another go.

One the last night, it was Joel's "turn" to stay out and ride the hot streak. While me, Andy and Hop retired to the hotel room. Everyone was sound asleep when Joel came back to the room sometime around 4am or so. I didn't hear him come in, but I did awake to Hop's screaming. He had sat up in his bed and just lost it, becoming his own hotel room-invasion alert. He must've thought Joel was breaking in or something. He just sat up and yelled, "AHHHHHH, AHHHHHHH, AHHHHHHHH, AHHHHHHHH" while everyone else was in stunned amazement. He finally shut up and just laid back down and fell asleep.

The next morning, Hop pretended to not remember. I knew he was lying. Everyone else was laughing so hard they had tears running down their cheeks. We went to the airport and flew home, with Hop flying a different flight than the rest of us, due to his living in Chicago at the time and all. Later, Hop admitted to me that he was afraid to fall asleep on the flight home... he didn't want a repeat Freak Out at 30,000 feet. I would have paid $5,000 to see that happen though. Maybe more.

As for the chips, the house chip was part of the 2004 haul. The others were bought on-line. Not the best chip collecting stories, but I will forever remember the Freak Out.

New York, NY

This chip was part of the Great Casino Chip Grab '04... which was the first trip I made where I consciously decided to start collecting. Starting with the 25th Anniversary Barbary Coast chips, I spent the better part of a day wandering in and out of Strip casinos, getting house chips.

The New York, NY will always be remembered for a couple of things. It was the site for my greatest ass-kicking ever, thanks to a murderous run at $25 blackjack. In fact, I think I have vowed to never play cards there again.

Speaking of New York, NY ass-kickings... Hop and I were wandering back to the the NY one night. About 25 yards in front of us were the front doors, with a bench on the other side of the sidewalk. A teenage kid was sitting on the bench. All of a sudden we hear, "There he is!!" and 4 or 5 other teenagers run from behind us to the bench and start throwing haymakers at the lone kid sitting there. They knock him off the bench, get in a few kicks and are gone as fast as they show up. I think both Hop and I were in shock, as we didn't even have time to make a funny comment. We both just kind of kept going, opened the doors and walked into the casino. That may have been the first fight I ever saw out there, sanctioned or not.

It was also the site for my most bizarre radio show call-in. When I worked at WILX, my boss always liked it when I called his radio show from Vegas. Which meant I had to be up and on a phone by 9am local time. Not always easy. He also liked to have plenty of sports book information, so it always helped if I was near one of those... even though it is illegal to use a cell phone in a sports book. Luckily, the New York, NY sports book has a low wall, so you can stand behind it and be on the phone, yet still see all the day's odds. So I'm sitting at a slot machine behind the wall, waiting for Tim to get out of a commercial or something and this homeless looking guy carrying a trash bag walks up to me. Right as Tim starts to introduce me, the guy walks by and says, "Hey man... you need any ecstasy?" A perfectly legit question at 8am on a Thursday. I declined, started laughing and then answered whatever questions The Dean had for me. But I always wondered if that entire trash bag was filled with ecstasy.

Not specific to any one stay at the New York, NY (I think I've stayed there 3 or 4 times), but I've probably uttered, "Where the fuck is teh Century Tower" at least 100 times. I know casino lay-outs are designed to keep you near the gaming areas, but trying to find your room in that place is nearly impossible.

Stardust

The Stardust was our hotel room of choice for the inaugural LV trip. This one would have been LV '98. Other trips were thusly named LV '99. LV '00. LV '00b. And so on and so forth. Sadly, the casino no longer stands, imploded a little more than a year ago.

The Stardust had a lot of things going for it in 1998. It was the site for some scenes from the movie Swingers, and home to a lot of lower stakes tables we could all be comfortable at. The movie Casino was about the days Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal ran the 'dust (which was called the Tangiers in the movie). Robert DeNiro played Rosenthal's character (renamed Sam "Ace" Rothstein in the movie). Siegfried and Roy got their start at the Stardust. Gay tiger-handlers were finally dealt a blackjack with that move. It was also really close to Slots-A-Fun, which sold the world's best 99cent half-pound hot dog. I preferred to put nacho cheese on mine, but some went with the traditional ketchup and mustard. The Stardust also made it a point to serve beer to people as they waited in line to check-in. A nice touch. It never dawned on me at the time that if they are giving you a drink in line, you are probably going to be there for a while. Live and learn.

I didn't get this chip on that trip, but since then I've added a couple other Stardust chips to my collection... buying them online. And there won't be any more... as Echelon Place is being erected on that site. It's supposed to be open late in 2010.

Island Resort and Casino

The Island Resort and Casino is located in Harris, MI, about 10 minutes from Escanaba. I think it used to be called the Chip-In Casino. Slick name change, what with the casino being on a peninsula and all. It used to have an indoor beach as well, but alas, that is gone, too.

As of January 2005, this place was remarkably the 12th largest casino in the United States (Based on floor space dedicated to gambling). Yes, that's right... the 12th largest. In a town 99.5% of Americans couldn't find on a map if given a 750 mile radius circle to slap down on a map. The other top casinos are predictably from Vegas, Connecticut (Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun), the Eagle (checking in at number 7), AC, and Tunica. Not too hard to figure out which city doesn't belong. In a town of 15,000 they have 135,000 square feet of floor space to gamble on (not too mention another ten or so casinos in the U.P.). That's 9 feet per person. Not too shabby. Of course, my 9 feet always includes 3 chain-smoking 75 year old ladies fresh off the bus... but I guess that's my problem.

On my most recent visit to the U.P., I added the Millennium chip to my collection. I was playing $5 double-deck... and it was being played at a breakneck pace. We got through 3 hands before shuffling. Every time. It started with just 3 of us playing, but before we even got through a round... the table filled up. Most of the players were lugging oxygen machines (yay middle of the day gambling!!). A smokey casino is right where I'd want to be if I were on oxygen, but whatever. The ones that weren't struggling to breathe, were struggling to add. Quite a collection.

As an added bonus, you could only double on a dealt 10 or 11. No doubling on any soft plays. Of course, the sign didn't mention that so when I was dealt Ace-four against a six and doubled, I brought the table to a screeching halt. So sorry to delay your $5 win or loss by another 6 seconds. But, other than that rule... it was a pretty decent set-up, rules-wise. They cut fairly deep (probably half the deck), but I expected that sitting at a double-deck table. It certainly beat the Eagle's devilish continuous shuffle machines.

For the hour or so I played, I ended up $12.50 in the positive. Take that you oxygen lovers.

Soaring Eagle

I visited the Soaring Eagle Casino for the first time in 1995. This was the original house chip, the new one is at the bottom of this post. The older one is a million times better than the new one. Back then, they had a Slots House (which is located across the street from the "new" casino/hotel) and a Card House, which was about 3/4 a mile down the road... really a glorified pole barn with blackjack, roulette and craps. With Glenn being at Central that year, he was able to give us directions to the casino by only using roads that had 27 foot deep ditches on either side of them. And it was always foggy when we went that way.

One of the first trips to the old Card House, we had to make a fake ID for Brandon to get in, who was only 17. We photocopied Joel's ID and Brandon's ID... and put Brandon's picture on Joel's information (thank you 1995 scanner technology) and Voila!!... he was 18. There were two entrances to the Card House, so Joel and Brandon had to go in different doors... lest the Cop ID'ing people recognized the same name on two licenses. It worked, but I had no idea how we would have explained it if Brandon had won big and needed to show ID again.

We also tried to get to the casino faster and faster each trip. Driving normally, it was about an hour trip. I think the record was in the 38 minute area... that one included a lot of "rolled" stops at stop signs. Not the smartest thing with the aforementioned ditches of death on either side of us, but we survived. I also can't believe we never hit a deer on any of those trips, but we were lucky in that regard as well.

Once, while at MSU, we were driving back from a casino trip and one of my roommates (who will remain nameless due to him becoming a police officer) spent a great majority of the time hanging out the passenger front seat window, throwing empty beer bottles at road signs as we sped past. Good times.

Another college trip saw me and Hop going up to Mt. Pleasant one afternoon. Usually we would call ahead and invite Joel and Glenn to come along, but this time, we just drove to Joel's apartment unannounced. He happened to be walking back from class, cutting across a parking lot when we saw him. He apparently didn't recognize the car. As he walked, we kind of stalked him, following him slowly in the car. After he finally figured out what was going on, he said something to the effect of "I had no idea who you were or what you wanted, but I wasn't eager to stick around and find out." I don't remember a rash of day-time parking lot beatings in Mt. Pleasant during that time... but I guess it could have happened. As it happened, the only beatings that day took place on the card table.

Of any non-Strip Casino, I have been to the Eagle the most. But not as much recently, what with their continuous shuffle machines and hour-long waits to play the incredibly exciting 3/6 Limit Hold 'em. But if they ever pump out a third chip, I'll be there in just over 38 minutes.

Stallone

The "Happy Birthday Sly Stallone" chip is a great one. I bought this one off of either eBay or www.oldvegaschips.com. What makes it so great to me is that in early 1996 I had made a bet with Hop on whether or not Stallone was 50 years old. I took the under and he took the over. He was about 2 months shy of his birthday, making me a winner. This was just after I won a bet from Hop... who foolishly bet on OJ to be found guilty. Not his best gambling year. But I'll always know how old Rocky is from now on.

Then... in December of 2005, Hop and I were at the Hopkins-Taylor fight at the Mandalay Bay. After the undercard fights and before the main event, they did some filming for the 6th Rocky movie, Rocky Balboa. Sadly, there were no cutaways of us cheering in the movie. But we were there... for some of it. And I'm sure I made roughly 9,872 Stallone Birthday jokes on the remainder of that trip. Looking forward to his 62nd birthday on July 6th!

The Skagit

I visited the Skagit Valley Casino in Bow, Washington in December of 2004. It was part of a Seattle/Vancouver vacation I took with Hop and Joel. We flew into Seattle, rented a car and drove to Vancouver for the first 3 days, then drove back to Seattle for another 3 days. On the drive up to Vancouver, we stopped at a Taco Bell and ate. On the way out, the three of us were walking through the parking lot to our rental car when Hop stopped, opened the car door and almost got in. Except it wasn't our rental car. I guess he had forgotten what ours looked like. It was nice to know that the area was safe enough to leave your car unlocked. On the way back from Vancouver, we stopped at the Skagit.
Go figure, it was raining. We spent an hour or two inside and if my memory serves me correctly, we all had our asses handed to us. But, I walked out with my first non-Michigan, non-Nevada casino chip. So take that Skagit.

Blog Update

Now that I have uploaded my current collection of $5 casino chips, I'll start to post some of the cool stories that go with some of these chips. I'll also be posting pictures of any new chips I get from here on out.

To start, the first chips that I actively sought to get were the Barbary Coast 25 Year Anniversary chips. There were 4 in all, one each for the 4 original owners. They were; Kenny Epstein, Michael Gaughan, Tino Tiberti, and Frank Toti.

I was able to get two of the four through normal blackjack play at the BC. After a few gin and tonics, I decided I had to have all 4. After hours of play, I was still stuck with just 2. So, I went to the cage and asked for the other two. It took them a while to go through stacks of chips and find the two I wanted, but seeing how it was probably 4am when I did this, I think they lady was more than happy to humor my drunk ass. So, I had the 4 original owners. I also scooped up a BC house chip (one of my all-time favorites) and my collection had begun. Live the Legend.
